We started in response to a postcard that residents received on March 19th, 2025. A proposed 180 megawatt standalone grid sized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). To be located on Coldbrook Road. Less than a mile from an elementary school. Located in a former auto salvage yard operated for 50+ years and left in questionable condition environmentally. Set right in between homes, on a residential street abutting the protected Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation watershed which helps to deliver water to 3+ million residents in eastern Massachusetts. Not to mention that for Oakham residents, our rural town has no public water and each resident relies on the purity of groundwater from their wells from our aquifer.
Advocates for Conservation of Rural Oakham’s Nature & SAFETY (ACORNS) is a citizens led organization committed to the health, safety, environment and our rural character of Oakham, and surrounding communities. We will do this by opposing the development of standalone grid scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in inappropriate and unsafe locations. ACORNS will encourage responsible energy solutions through community engagement, legal oversight, education, and collaboration with local and state agencies.
We are volunteers from across the political spectrum, including parents, veterans, healthcare providers, retirees, and professionals. Areas of our focus include outreach, development, legal, and research.
