Join the fight to protect the drinking water of 3+ million in Massachusetts.
W. H. Auden
We started in response to a postcard that abutters received on March 19, 2025. A proposed 180 megawatt standalone grid sized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was proposed on Coldbrook Road, less than a mile from our elementary school. This BESS would be located in a former auto salvage yard that was left in questionable environmental condition. Set right in between homes, on a residential street abutting the protected Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation watershed which helps to deliver water to 3+ million residents in eastern Massachusetts. Not to mention that for Oakham residents, our rural town has no public water and each resident relies on the purity of groundwater from their wells from our aquifer.
We hope to educate the public on the risks and impact of these stand alone, grid scale, battery energy storage system projects. We advocate for appropriate regulations and protections. We organize community response and outreach. And we provide transparency in all actions while preserving strategic confidentiality where necessary.
We are a citizens led organization committed to the health, safety, environment, and rural character of Oakham and surrounding communities. We will do this by opposing the development of standalone grid scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in inappropriate and unsafe locations. We will encourage responsible energy solutions through community engagement, education, and collaboration with local and state agencies.
