🌿 Help Protect Oakham, MA – Our Land, Our Water, Our Voice
A for-profit energy company—encouraged by the State of Massachusetts efforts for green energy standards—is pushing to install a massive 180-megawatt battery storage facility right in the heart of Oakham’s protected watershed. This project threatens our clean drinking water, our wildlife habitats, and the rural character that makes our community so special.
We are a grassroots movement of residents, environmental stewards, and local families standing up for what’s right. theACORNS.org is committed to protecting Oakham’s natural resources, holding state agencies accountable, and preserving our future.
But we can't do it without you. Your donation will support:
Once we are able to accept donations, every dollar strengthens our ability to defend Oakham from outside forces that would trade our safety and land for corporate gain.
Your support empowers a community that refuses to be silenced.
We have applied for federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status as of 06/02/25. Any donations, once we are able to receive them are not tax-deductible until IRS tax-exempt approval is granted, we are aware the approval process can take about 1 month. We cannot guarantee if or when that may happen. Our EIN for your records of our non-profit corporation is 39-2439119

We hope to educate the public on the risks and impact of these stand alone, grid scale, battery energy storage system projects. We advocate for appropriate regulations and protections. We organize community response and outreach. And we provide transparency in all actions while preserving strategic confidentiality where necessary.

We started in response to a postcard that residents received on March 19th, 2025. A proposed 180 megawatt standalone grid sized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). To be located on Coldbrook Road. Less than a mile from an elementary school. Located in a former auto salvage yard operated for 50+ years and left in questionable condition environmentally. Set right in between homes, on a residential street abutting the protected Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Conservation watershed which helps to deliver water to 3+ million residents in eastern Massachusetts. Not to mention that for Oakham residents, our rural town has no public water and each resident relies on the purity of groundwater from their wells from our aquifer.
Advocates for Conservation of Oakham’s Rural Nature & Safety is a citizens led organization committed to the health, safety, environment and our rural character of Oakham, and surrounding communities. We will do this by opposing the development of standalone grid scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in inappropriate and unsafe locations. We will encourage responsible energy solutions through community engagement, legal oversight, education, and collaboration with local and state agencies.
We are volunteers from across the political spectrum, including parents, veterans, healthcare providers, retirees, and professionals. Areas of our focus include outreach, development, legal, and research.
